Toys 'R' Us

Toys ‘R’ Us is gone

But their buildings remain

As little fuck yous to kids

All that emptiness through the windows

Was once full of row after row of toys

Colors popping all over the place

Toys ‘Were’ Us/Them

Everything in there had an aura of pleasure

Was oriented toward joy

Even the things you didn’t want

Existed to make someone else happy

And you knew that somehow

Which added to the rush

Walking the aisles

Taking it all in

How does such a place disappear

Go into insolvency

Get liquidated

I’m grateful for the parking lots now

The pavement’s monochrome inverse

Of the Toys ‘R’ Us rainbow

I make a point of using them

To pause/to run around in/to cut through

Then I’m on my way

    That stanza is pure gold.

Now I want to pass by one of the empty stores later this week.
